    Management and Strategy

Many business challenges have key technical dimensions: an IT system needs an overhaul, production scheduling can benefit from a custom software package, or improved market penetration hinges on understanding of new technological applications. The Center for Industrial Effectiveness (TCIE) can mobilize a team to address these needs effectively with resources from the departments of Industrial Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, the Center for Technical Communication, and many other sources.

Project Examples
A faculty/consultant team conducted a market analysis for one of Imaging and Sensing Technologies’ product lines in the field of laser instrumentation and measurement. The project included an evaluation of equipment performance, product benchmarking, market surveys, and a review of expanded applications for measurement technology.

For Caplugs, a manufacturer of injected molded plastic and vinyl protective covers for industrial and consumer products, a blended team of faculty and consultants laid the groundwork for a new IT system that would be aligned with the company’s strategies for growth and customer service. The team mapped the flow of information and reviewed a range of issues in design of an optimum IT strategy, a blend of commercial solutions and customization.

TCIE provided a range of services for ThatsIt, Inc. a start-up company developing engineered industrial and consumer projects. While an adjunct faculty member of the School of Management reviewed the soundness of the company’s business plan, the New York State Center for Engineering Design and Industrial Innovation (NYSCEDII) converted product drawings to Pro-Engineering CAD format. NYSCEDII went on to model and animate a portable scrubber product for
ThatsIt. The animation simulated operation of the device and provided the company with a sales and marketing tool. NYSCEDII’s design team also incorporated design modifications into the original design and supported the prototype development process.

One of our consulting partners provided training and support for market and product development strategy at Plesh Industries, a manufacturer of materials handling products for the steel industry. We introduced Plesh Industries to a systematic process for generating and evaluating new ideas for new products and new market opportunities. Consulting services included development of a formal process for prioritizing ideas, for conducting opportunity analyses and market research and market research.
